As healthcare organizations and providers attempt to improve the quality of health care, patient safety and patient experiences, it has become apparent that the systems of care delivery have been organized to promote the convenience of those who deliver care rather than those who receive it. Therefore, as we move forward, any new innovations must result in cost effective value improvements from patients’ perspectives. Innovations must also include the full spectrum of new MIS surgical techniques and methods, the redesign of facilities, and organizational structures, as well as processes that will require new forms of collaboration between health care providers, hospitals, researchers, the business community, patients and their families.
Pittsburgh is fortunate to have a growing community of innovators as well as a premier health care system. The goal of this first of its kind conference is to bring together leading physicians, allied health professionals, scientists, entrepreneurs, hospital administrators, and leaders in the business community. If we are successful merging the next generation of disruptive innovations with Patient and Family Centered Care, we will dramatically improve the way we treat patients and the way that we do business. In so doing, we will reaffirm and fortify Western Pennsylvania as the model for care delivery and business successes.
We must merge these new surgical and medical techniques, novel technologies and re-engineered processes with unique training tools in order to develop innovative solutions to support patient and family centered care. Only then will new
innovations benefit patients, their families, physicians, allied health care professionals, staff and hospitals.
